The Town of Dover is an affluent suburban community southwest of Boston. Dover was incorporated in 1784. Dover relied primarily on agricultural and grazing as the basis for its colonial economy. However during the late 18th century the damming of the Charles River provided power and allowed some development of mills. By the late 19th century Dover firmly a suburban community and was the home to many wealthy Bostonians. Wealthy Bostonians created 18 estates between 1901 & 1914 alone, some as large as 300-400 acres.
