North River

The Town of Hanover is a suburban community in Plymouth County. The town was first settled in 1649 and incoporated in 1727. The town's early economy was based on lumbering and and agriculture . The lumber was used for shipbuilding and house building. By the 18th century the town's economy was very self sufficient due to the wealth of water power resources and shipbuilding on the North River. Unfortunately a market for larger ships than the North River could hold ended the shipbuilding industry in Hanover. The town was the site of the first tack making machiine and also manufactured fireworks in the later 19th century. The most significant development post civil-civil war has been residential as roads improved in the 20th century.
