Mystic River
The City of Medford is a historic suburbn city located on the Mystic River. Originally the site of the estates owned by Governor Craddock and Governor Winthrop. Medford became a town in 1695 and a city in 1892. During colonial times the city's prosperity was based on on being a tidewater seaport, with shipbuilding and distilling Medford was part of the triangle trade . There was a significant slave population. After the decline of the shipbuilding industry, printed cloth, linseed oil, carpets, and rum became the major products of the city as did education with the founding of Tufts University in 1852. The city retains a rich architectural heritage and has at least one outstanding example of each architectural period. The earliest homes remaining in the community are the Peter Tufts House of 1678 and the Jonathan Wade House of 1689. For more information click City of Medford
