Rockland

Town Center

The Town of Rockland is an industrial community 20 miles southeast of Boston in Plymouth County. In 1645 Plymouth county granted the area which was to become Rockland to Timoth Hatherly. The first settlers were drawn to the rich woodlands of pine and oak and the first mill was opened in 1703 by the Thaxter family. In the 19th century the town was the center for shoe production and by the Civil War, Rockland was supposed to have shod half the Union Army. The town was incorporated in 1874. With the commercial expansion along Route 123 , residential development soon followed. Although Rockland has been an industrial community since the mid 19th century, there are still large tracts of wooded areas that allow the town to retain its rural character.
