The City of Somerville is an urban industrial city in the Mystic Valley. It occupies abourt 4.1 square miles along the divide between the lower Charles and the Mystic River. In its earliest history , Somerville served as grazing lands for the residents of Charlestown, with only a few permanent settlements. Somerville is the location of the first ship built in the colonies and was a critical military position during the American Revolution. The town was established in 1842 and the population soon tripled and continued to double each decade thereafter till 1870. During the mid 19th century heavy industry became prominent in Somerville's economy. Diversification into glass production, food processing and meat packing soon followed. The opening of the street car lines again pushed further population growth . By World War II the density of Somerville was said to rival Calcutta. Today Somerville is a city whose residents enjoy the close proximity to Boston, yet enjoy the distinct flavor and character of its own smaller city. For more information click City of Somerville
